Get in Shape with Ballroom Dancing

ballroomdance.jpgI’m not big on reality shows. In fact, I only give two a second look: Last Comic Standing, because I love stand-up comedy, and Dancing with the Stars, because I love dance.

But something else has occurred to me — both shows can have a positive impact on your body! Think about it a moment. Laughter is a good exercise for both body and mind. So watching Last Comic Standing can give you a mini workout if you think the jokes are funny. Some of those comedians have had me laughing so hard water was coming out of my eyes.

Gotta Dance!

bluebellydance.jpgPatience is something I almost completely lack. I have itchy feet. Once I decide I want something, which, admittedly can take awhile, I want it now. It is probably this desire, this need to be in constant motion, which has steered me to dance.

On that note, I’d like to tell you about a scene from Singin’ In the Rain that really speaks to me. It’s the “Gotta Dance!” sequence, where Gene Kelly’s character, in a daydream, tries to get a job dancing. He goes up to a nightclub door, knocks and when someone comes out he sings, “Gotta dance!” and then shows some of his steps. It’s beautifully choreographed and showcases Gene’s and Cyd Cherise’s talents quite well.

This scene is really powerful for me, for on a deeper level, it tells my story. Read more »
