Murdering Metabolism

metabolismmurder.jpgCan you “murder” your metabolism? Not really – but you can certainly screw with it’s “mind.” Let’s say, just for example, you are not consistent with your diet. You have been in and out of weight loss programs and, over the years; you gain and lose weight.

This can seriously screw up your metabolic rhythm. But it doesn’t destroy it – if your metabolism was truly murdered, you would be, too. Metabolism is merely the process by which your body converts food into energy. If it were to stop doing that, you would be dead.

Measuring Metabolism

metabolism.jpgI thought I’d try something a bit different this month. Writing is a sedentary vocation, which can impact your metabolism. So I thought I’d take the next few posts to discuss this important par tof your body’s wellbeing.

The first step is to measure your metabolism.

How do we measure metabolism?

There are two ways to measure metabolism. The first method is direct calorimetry. This method measures the energy expended in the form of heat.

The second method is indirect calorimetry, it measures the amount of oxygen consumed over a period of time.

Both methods are traditionally used in hospital and research facilities, due to the cost of the machine and the need for trained technicians.
