metabolism.jpgI thought I’d try something a bit different this month. Writing is a sedentary vocation, which can impact your metabolism. So I thought I’d take the next few posts to discuss this important par tof your body’s wellbeing.

The first step is to measure your metabolism.

How do we measure metabolism?

There are two ways to measure metabolism. The first method is direct calorimetry. This method measures the energy expended in the form of heat.

The second method is indirect calorimetry, it measures the amount of oxygen consumed over a period of time.

Both methods are traditionally used in hospital and research facilities, due to the cost of the machine and the need for trained technicians.

How do you prepare for the test?

The aim of the test is to gauge the RMR or the Resting Metabolic Rate of an individual. Therefore, you need to:

  • avoid eating a meal one and a half hours before the test,
  • avoid exercising on the day of your test, and
  • avoid using stimulants, such as caffeine, on the day of the test.

What happens in the testing bed?

You will relax in a seated position. A mask or mouthpiece will be used and you will have to breathe in it for ten to fifteen minutes. After the test, a report will be printed out by the machine. The most important part is discussing the results with your doctor so you can come up with next steps.

For how long are the results valid?

Your RMR and your total metabolism changes over time. Change in any element of your lifestyle can directly affect the result. For you to keep a track of your metabolic rate, seek help from your doctor.

Why would you want to go through all this?

Your metabolism affects not only your weight, but has implications for your lifestyle and longevity. Knowledge is power. Knowing your metabolic rate empowers you to make better, more educated choices.
