As a writer, you need to sell your work in order to make an income. But, as a creative person, sales can seem like a ugly thing that has to be done. It doesn’t need to be that way.
Loral Langemeier wrote in her book The Millionaire Maker’s Guide to Creating a Cash Machine for Life that many people are afraid of sales “because they don’t want to be seen as pushy.” This comes from the common misconception that sales needs to be pushy. It doesn’t.
Pushy sales people have money and their ultimate goal. They don’t care if their customer gains anything from the purchase, so long as they purchase. But sales is really a way of offering your unique expression of service to the world. The way sales should be performed is as a way of helping customers solve problems, help them improve their lives in some way.
As a writer, you do this by educating and/or entertaining your audience with your words. Here is a better way to approach sales in your business — a way that can easily be in harmony with your spirit:
- Talk with your customers. Find out what they wand and need. Then you can help them find it.
- Provide leadership in the sales process, but let the customers make their own decisions. Leave the responsibility in the hands of the client.
- Build a relationship with your customers and clients. Make this relationship mutually beneficial for both the client and yourself.
Depending on what kind of writing you do, your clients and customers are many and you will reach them in a variety of ways. Here is a short list of people you should consider including in your new spiritual sales process:
- Readers
- Editors
- Consulting Clients
- Business Partners
- Vendors
- Publishers
